Stirchley Baths restoration guaranteed by a £3.7 million loan from the city council

The transformation of the derelict Stirchley Baths site into the new Stirchley community centre has been guaranteed by a £3.7 million loan from the city council.

For many years the regeneration plans for Stirchley being pursued by the local councillors have been dependent upon being funded by the sale of council land in Stirchley to TESCO so that TESCO could acquire a site large enough to build their new supermarket.

However for years these plans have been continually delayed by legal action by the Midlands Co-operative as they seek to thwart Tesco’s arrival in Stirchley.

By guaranteeing the £3.5 million the city council has ensured that the centrepiece of Stirchley’s regeneration, the conversation of the old Stirchley Baths, can begin immediately.

Councillor Nigel Dawkins said, ‘This is a wonderful act of commitment by the council. They realise that Stirchley has waited long enough to see this site restored. We are confident that TESCO will eventually clear all of the legal hurdles but this loan means that this restoration work can begin immediately and ensures that within 12 months Stirchley residents will have a community centre they can be proud of.’
